Squarespace Acquires Google Domains

June 15, 2023

In a stunning move, Alphabet Inc. has decided to shut down Google Domains by selling its assets to Squarespace for $180 million. It is estimated that 10 million domains will be moving over to Squarespace at the conclusion of the deal. Google Domains is a domain name registrar that offers domain name registration, DNS hosting, dynamic DNS, domain forwarding, and email forwarding.

It is absolutely crazy writing this since Google Registry had been active in the release of new TLDs just last month. The good news is executives have reassured current customers that renewals will remain consistent for at least the next 12 months. This comes as a relief as prices for both registrations and renewals have seen an uptick as seen across other registrars.

Squarespace is among one of the leaders in website builders, so it comes as no surprise they were the frontrunner to make the acquisition. With a market cap of $4.14 billion as of this month, they plan to bolster their offerings and remain competitive amongst their peers such as Shopify, WordPress, Wix, GoDaddy, and more.

Google Domains launched June 13, 2014. The deal is not expected to close until Q3 2023.
