Thoughts About New Business Ventures During COVID-19 Uncertainty

Since most of us are deemed non-essential, we have been tethered to the confines of home and with much more personal time on our hands.

Even working remote, I've found myself doing more around the house and trying to stay productive. We're starting to see more individuals filing for unemployment as businesses have been crippled by the current shelter-in-place orders to prevent community spread. This is when ideas are spun for how can I sustain future job security and a steady income where many sectors of the workforce face uncertainty; individuals now have the ability to reflect and pivot moving forward.

Where to start?

If you have an idea for a sustainable business venture, then you likely have a potential name.

The single best approach you can take is by looking into professional branding and web design/development. In a time where Shopify and Squarespace are available, it's still important to seek professional advice. This is a sector that is still fully operational because they are able to carry on remotely. I can tell you right now that those who are good at these two things will not be cheap, but they will be able to steer you in the right direction by bringing your vision to life and to get your business to quickly hit the ground running.

Online presence.

I think we can all agree that businesses should be found online.

Whether it's to promote your products or solutions, it's essential that you get yourself out there.

  • What are your hours?
  • Who can I contact about a question?
  • What's your pricing?
  • How is the current pandemic effecting your business?

There are a myriad of questions that should be answered quickly to keep operations going as efficient as possible. It's important to keep potential and current customers informed the best you can.

Social media marketing.

Social media is a great way to branch out and stick to the theme of keeping these potential and current customers informed.

Whether it's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, these are great avenues to take in order to promote your business. The best part is that this form of marketing can be automated and you can post as often as you'd like to keep people excited and engaged—essentially for free with the exception of your time. Your time and knowledge on how to do this may not align, so consider hiring someone to come up with a marketing strategy and handle this aspect for you—this is for sure in most cases the easier route.

Hopefully this short read has provided some insight if you've found yourself struggling or just need a kick in the pants to get going. We should all be helping and picking each other up during these uncertain times. Find what you love to do and what you're good at in order to put those practices in motion. Who knows, it might even be a lucrative venture.

Final thoughts on COVID-19.

I feel that it's important to say that the past few months have been tightly wound into one word: insanity. Who would've thought that humanity would be suffering in an age where it seemed like all was fine and well. Every day we're reminded how life is fleeting; my heart hurts for anyone negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic—especially those that have lost a friend or family member.

Together, we will overcome these obstacles. Medical professionals are hard at work doing all they can to save the lives of those who are sick and are also in the works of creating a safe vaccine that will likely not be ready for use until next year. There is still hope as life will gradually start to return to normalcy.

A big shoutout to everyone following the shelter-in-place guidelines and to all the essential workers, first responders, nurses and doctors for keeping us going.

You are the key cog in our fight and we thank you.

Stay safe and well.
