The Hype is Real for AR, VR, MR and XR

March 7, 2020

The popularity and widespread acceptance of AR, VR, MR and XR is growing faster than ever. With Snapchat adopting and implementing AR technology in their social video and photo app, we’re going to start seeing this become commonplace for many companies in the very near future.

Immersive experiences are the way of the future. Whether it be for leisure, major life decisions as well as the workforce, time saved and efficiency gained will be just another step forward.

We already know that gaming and social media are large proponents of this technology, but these technologies will also be critical within most job sectors.

Let’s dive into some examples.

We’re already seeing companies such as BMW, Rolls-Royce and Qatar Airways, to name a few, train their engineers using VR. Think of the potential mistakes that can be corrected by using this type of simulation.

Transportation

Hyundai’s VR headset demo to show individuals a real flying taxi experience (eventually autonomous) with Uber is quite impressive to think about. We can show people how more time efficient, and affordable distant transport will look like in the years to come. This will be especially useful for commuters in densely populated cities such as Seattle, New York City and Los Angeles.

Heathcare

Healthcare workers can help individuals suffering from mental health related issues with controlled experiences. Doctors can train for specific surgeries with advanced knowledge of what to better expect and which techniques to perform in any given moment.

Sports

Imagine "going" to a basketball game and sitting courtside where physical seats cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. This enables us to attend if we’re cross-country, out-of-country or want to re-watch at a later day or time.

Military & Law Enforcement

The Air Force is using XR to train flight crews and maintainers of their planes. Police are simulating experiences with various sensory stimuli in an array of cases to de-escalated potentially harmful situations.

Education

Today, we have in-person and online classes. Wouldn’t it be cool to be in a lecture that enabled us to visit remote areas of the world?

What’s the difference between AR, VR, MR and XR?

Augmented Reality (AR)

Generated content overlaid within the real world

Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual, immersive experience

Mixed Reality (MR)

Seamlessly blends AR and VR

Extended Reality (XR)

Umbrella term for AR, VR and MR

Retail

The online shopping landscape will change dramatically with the ability to do personal body scans. This will give individuals a better idea of what clothes they feel they look best in without the need to physically try them on first.

Real Estate

Real estate tours will save time traveling to and from different properties especially if planning to relocate out-of-state. This gives the individual a better understanding of how big rooms really are as opposed to simply looking at photos or videos.

There is so much more to this kind of technology and to think that we’re just scratching the surface is incredible.

The potential here is really endless and we should be excited for what has already been brought and what the future is going to bring.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that we’ve scooped up a handful of domains that are specific to this industry.
